Skill: Concentration
Drill: Praise, Detail, Praise
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: Students will practice having good concentration by being able point out 2 things they liked about their instructor’s technique and also be being able to point out something they could do better.
Teaching SKILLZ:
NEUROBICS – While they are telling the instructor what they should do better, they should relate their criticism to something, saying “Next time, do ___ just like ___”. For example, the students can say “next time, try to put your hands up like a ninja”, or “next time, punch super strong like superman”. This will engage their left and right hemispheres of the brain and allow the students to be more engaged in the activity.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The students must be able to see the combination the instructor is doing, and spot the mistakes. This works on their ability to make sense of what they see, as they have to look for the mistakes that the instructor is doing and then let the instructor know constructively.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Student will be ready to observe the instructors combo to provide feedback
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The first students in each line will come up and the instructor will throw a martial arts combo.
  • The student will then have to give the instructor something they liked about the move, then something the instructor could work on, then praise the instructor again on something else they did well.
  • The students will want 3 combos each time they come up.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Watch your instructor the entire time so that you can help them get better.
  • Make sure you aren’t mean when giving feedback.
  • Don’t give up, this game can be tough but if you stay focused you will crush it.
Step 5
  • Continue for 2-3 turns.
