Skill: Concentration
Drill: Watch Your Feet
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: Students will work on their CONCENTRATION by working on the foot work of their forms. This will challenge students physical stage of development by really focusing on their stances and the way their feet should move
Teaching SKILLZ:
NEUROBICS – Instead of counting normally, the students can name things from a category that the instructor picks, like colors, ice cream flavors, superheroes, etc. This will engage their left and right hemispheres of the brain and allow the students to be more engaged in the activity.
Brain SKILLZ:
ATTENTION CONTROL – The student must be able to complete their form focusing only on their kicks and stances. This works on their ability to focus on one thing for an extended period of time, as they must go deep in their stances and have correct foot positioning while they do their form.
Step 1
Divide your students into groups.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Stand with your hands on your back to focus only on the footwork.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The students will stand up with their instructors and put their hands behind their back.
  • The instructor will lead the group through the form with just their feet and students will follow along.
  • As students are doing this instructors should be also looking around to make sure that the students are getting the foot work down.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Watch your instructor. They are there to help you, use them.
  • Pay attention to the tiny details of your stances. This is your chance to really make them look good.
  • Take your time. Slower is better when you have better technique.
Step 5
  • Continue for 2-3 rounds.
