Skill: Concentration
Drill: Think Fast!
Equipment needed: One small pad per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will build reactive speed by testing their reaction time to catch a pad.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can say things that sound like “think fast”, like “think slow”, or say things like “go” to try and trick the students, which will help the students listen for the whole word or phrase, not just the sounds.
AUDITORY PROCESSING – The students must listen for the audio cue of the phrase “think fast” and respond by turning around. They then must see the object coming towards them, and catch it before it hits the ground. This works on their ability to complete a task quickly and accurately, as they have to both listen and watch for cues in order to catch the object correctly.
Step 1
Divide your students into several lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
The instructor will stand five steps away with a small pad.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The student will turn his/ her back to the instructor.
  • The instructor will say “think fast!” and the student must turn around and catch the pad. Repeat this step three times.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Work on concentration by listening to cue words.
  • The goal is to increase the students’ reaction time as they try to catch and strike the pad.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has a turn. Next, have the students punch the pad back to the instructor.
