Skill: Concentration
Drill: Math Challenge
Equipment needed: One wave bag cushion per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice having concentration with math problems while kicking over a pad. This will help them concentrate on problem solving while also having to concentrate in keeping their chamber leg high while they kick over the pad.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can ask the student if they want an easy, medium, or hard math problem. The instructor can give them addition for easy, subtraction for medium, and multiplication for hard. The choice in the activity will empower the students, as they will feel more in control over what they are doing.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – When the instructor says a math problem, the student must process that problem as quick as they can and complete the correct amount of kicks over the pad. This works on their ability to make the correct choices quickly and accurately, as they have to do the correct amount of kicks or they will have pushups.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line you will need a wave bag cushion or stack of targets for the students to kick over.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • I will call out a math problem with the sum equal to between 1 and 10.
  • The sum of the math problem will be the amount of reps that you must kick over the pad with.
  • You must do ten push-ups if you get the math problem wrong, if you put your foot down before you complete your reps, or if you knock the pad over.
  • You will solve three math problems per turn.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Work on concentration by working on math and kicks at the same time.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least three turns. Increase the sum to be between 11 and 20 on the second turn; and between 21 and 30 on the third turn.
