Here are the three BLOCKING tips that I want everyone to practice today:

1. Keep your fists tight. 2. Pull your other arm tight to your side. 3. Watch where you are blocking.
Skill-Building Drills – 15 Minutes

Freeze the Cone:

Students will practice BLOCKING by demonstrating their ability to hold a high block in the proper position. This will challenge the students physically by requiring them to hold their arm high for an extended period of time.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: HEALTHY COMPETITION – After the first round, make it a competition to see which student can get the longest time.
  • Brain SKILLZ: ATTENTION CONTROL – The student must focus on holding their block up for as long as they can, without giving up even though their arm may get tired.

Pad Drop Challenge:

The students will block targets that are dropped from above. This will help the students build hand-eye-coordination and spatial awareness.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student can block all the pads, the instructor will do 5 pushups.
  • Brain SKILLZ: SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student must be able to hear the instructor’s command, and track the pad as it falls as well, and block quickly.
