Don’t Drop the Penny
Two pennies and a kicking target
1 per Line
In this drill the students will hold a penny in each hand while they kick the target. This will teach them how to keep their fists tight and their hands up while they kick.
NEUROBICS – While they are kicking, have the students name a color every time they kick to further test their divided attention.
DIVIDED ATTENTION – The student must be able to kick while keeping their fists tight the whole time, so they do not drop the pennies
Explain to your students that a good Martial Artist can keep their fists tight and hands up while they kick.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Show the students two pennies. Hold one penny in each hand and demonstrate how you can hold the pennies tight and kick the target.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
Have one student volunteer to go first. Place one penny in each of the student’s hands and tell him to hold them tight.
Have him hold his hands up with his fists touching his cheek (this is the best way for them to learn how to hold their hands up) as shown in the video.
Have the student kick the target ten times, alternating legs, while holding the pennies tight.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
Students will learn how to keep their fists tight and their hands up while they kick.
Continue until each student has at least two turns.
