Drill: Sideways Challenge
Equipment needed: 1 Slammer pad per line
Instructors needed: One per line
Description: The students will practice KICKING by being able to demonstrate a kick that is above their stage of development. This will challenge the students physical stage of development by requiring them to do a kick with different chambers and foot position.
Teaching SKILLZ: EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION
  • If the student can do the sidekick five times in a row correctly, the instructor will have three pushups.
Brain SKILLZ: WORKING MEMORY
  • The student must be able to execute a sidekick with the proper foot positioning and chamber, and make sure that it does not turn into a front kick.
Step 1
  • Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting up the Drill:
  • For each line, you will need an instructor holding the pad for each student.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The 1st student will stand up with their shoulder facing towards the instructor.
  • When the instructor counts, the students will demonstrate a side kick trying to keep their toes sideways.
  • The students will do 5 kicks on each side.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Keep you knee high when you kick.
  • Don’t hit with your toes up.
  • Keep your eyes open and looking at where you’re kicking.
Step 5
  • Continue so that each student has at least 2 turns.
