Skill: Coordination
Drill: Twin Jump Front Kicks
Equipment needed: Two clapper targets
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will practice their coordination by doing “two things at one time” with twin jump front kicks.
Teaching SKILLZ:
INTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student is able to kick around their knee-height, they have a good twin jump front kick for their age. If they are able to get their kicks above their knees, they have a great twin jump front kick for their age. If they are able to get their kicks to hip height or higher, they have amazing twin jump front kicks for their age and that is super impressive!
Brain SKILLZ:
DIVIDED ATTENTION – Instead of focusing on one leg doing a front kick, the student now has to focus on jumping and front kicking with both legs at the same time. This works on their ability to do more than one thing at one time.
Step 1
Divide your students into several lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have one instructor hold two kicking targets.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • For some of the beginner students, you may want to have a “spotter.”
  • On each turn allow the students to kick the target three to five times.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Multi tasking with kicks
  • Work on advanced kicks
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least two turns.
