Skill: Coordination
Drill: Race to the Line
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: Several to monitor
Description: In this drill the students will practice having coordination by knowing the left side of the room and the right side of the room.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can call out “left” or “right”, and point in the opposite direction than the one they call. This will test their auditory processing and visual processing, as they have to recognize the audio cue as correct and the visual cue as incorrect.
Brain SKILLZ:
AUDITORY PROCESSING – The students must be able to hear what direction the instructor calls, “left”, “right”, or “middle”, and run to that area faster than their opponents. This works on their ability to respond to audio cues quickly and accurately.
Step 1
Have your class line up in the middle of the mat.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Make sure they are spaced apart so that they are not standing too close to each other. Mark a line on the left and right side of the mat for the students to race to.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor will say “left” or “right” and you must run to the proper side of the room and stand at attention.
  • The last student to the line is out.
  • If you run to the wrong side of the mat, then you are out as well.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Make sure you listen to audio commands.
  • Separate audio cues from visual cues
  • Practice running fast
  • Beat your opponent
Step 5
  • Continue until there is only one student left standing.
