Skill: COORDINATION
Drill: Criss Cross Kicks
Equipment needed: 1 clapper target, 1 block, 1 bar per line
Instructors needed: 1 per line
Description: Students will practice Bilateral COORDINATION with their kicks by kicking across the vertical plane and saying the side with which they are kicking with.
Teaching SKILLZ: TRICKERY
On the second round once the student has gotten the hang of things, the instructor can trick the student by saying random words as they throw the pads up, or they can say the name of a different direction. This will further enhance their visual processing, as they will work on their ability to recognize the verbal cues as incorrect and the visual cues as correct.
Brain SKILLZ: VISUAL PROCESSING
The students must be able to see which side the pad is on, and hit the pad with the correct leg. This works on their ability to make sense of what they see, as if the pad is on their right side, they must kick the pad with their left leg, and vice versa.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting up the Drill
  • Set up the bar in the block with the bar sticking up vertically in the air
  • Have 1 instructor standing behind the bar holding a clapper pad
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor will call out 10 alternating Left and Right front kicks
  • You must kick with that foot, across the bar to hit the clapper pad.
  • You must say “left” and/or “right” for each kick.
  • On round 2 we will call random Left and Right kicks
Step 4 – Takeaways
  • Think before you kick so you use the correct side
  • Don’t forget to chamber and rechamber your kick
  • Yell “left” and “right” on each kick loudly
Step 5
  • Continue for at least 2 rounds.
