Drill: Monsters & Ninjas
Equipment needed: 2 wavemasters per line
Instructors needed: A few to monitor
Description: Students will work on engaging their brains using neurobics and increasing their COORDINATION in this drill by having to react quickly to kick with their lead front kick if there is a Monster, and to the rear with a rear sidekick if there is a Ninja!
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can say “monsters” and point to the pad behind them, or say “ninjas” and point to the pad in front of them to try and trick the student.
Brain SKILLZ:
AUDITORY PROCESSING – The student must be able to associate the audio cue “monsters” with lead leg front kick, and the audio cue “ninja” with rear leg side kick. This works on their ability to respond to audio cues accurately. This will test their auditory processing and visual processing, as they have to recognize the audio cue as correct and the visual cue as incorrect.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have 2 wavemasters set up for each line with enough space for a student to stand and kick
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The first student in each line will face one of the pads and go to a guarding stance.
  • When the instructor yells “monster” the student will perform a lead leg front kick to the pad in front of you.
  • When the instructor yells “ninja” you will do a rear leg side kick to the pad behind you
  • If you make a mistake than the Monster or Ninja catches you, your goal is to not let them catch you!
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Remember to yell loud to scare away the Ninjas and Monsters
  • Look over your shoulder for each side kick so you see the ninja
  • Push with your front kick instead of snapping your kick.
Step 5
  • Continue until everyone has 2-3 turns.
