Skill: Coordination
Drill: Copycat
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill we will work on our COORDINATION through repetition by doing and saying each Left and Right command to build body awareness.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – On the second round, the instructor can ask the students if they would like to try to get to a five-move combination. On the third round, if they could do five moves at a time, the instructor can let them try seven. This empowers the students as they have the ability to choose a harder option, which will motivate them to complete the task and will make them feel more confident in themselves, as they did not have to do the harder option, but they did it anyways.
Brain SKILLZ:
WORKING MEMORY – The student will have to remember what the instructor says as the combination slowly gets bigger. This focuses on the ability to hold onto information while performing a task, as they have to remember the combinations that they do as moves get added on.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have 1 instructor per line.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The first student in each line will go to a guarding stance. The instructor will call out a left or right kick by saying “Left Kick!” or “Right Kick!”
  • The student will perform the kick saying what the instructor said i.e. “Left Kick!” or “Right Kick!”
  • The instructor will then add on a second kick i.e. “Left Kick, Left Kick!” The student will then do AND say what the instructor said.
  • The repeat again with a third kick i.e. “Left Kick, Left Kick, Right Kick!” The student will again do AND say what the instructor said.
  • Continue up to 4-5 kicks
Step 4 – Takeaways:
