Skill: COORDINATION
Drill: Ladder Punches
Equipment needed: Two focus mitts per line
Instructors needed: 1 per line
Description: In this drill the students will strike the mitts while doing ladder punching. This is a great drill for the students to practice their counting.
Teaching SKILLZ: EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION
If the student makes a mistake, then the student has to start over from zero and try again. If they get it right on the first try, then the instructor will have five pushups.
Brain SKILLZ: WORKING MEMORY
The student must be able to count using the correct numbers and pattern, and making sure that they do the correct amount of punches. This works on their ability to hold onto information while performing a task, as they must be able to remember how many punches they must do on each hand, as the number changes as they play this game.
Step 1
Divide your students into several lines.
Step 2 – Setting up the Drill
  • The students will take turns doing ladder punches:
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Punch with right hand and say “1”
  • Punch with left hand and say “1”
  • Punch twice with right hand while counting each punch “one-two”
  • Punch twice with left hand while counting each punch “one-two”
  • Punch three times with right hand “one-two-three”
  • Punch three times with left hand “one-two-three”
Step 4
  • Continue until each student has at least two turns.
Step 5
  • The goal for this drill is for the students to count each individual punch. This takes coordination to count and punch while increasing the reps each punch. Sometimes the student may count faster than they punch. Correct them and have them start over if they make a mistake.
