Skill: COORDINATION
Drill: Hot Rod Race
Equipment needed: 1 cones, 1 wheeled cart or smooth kicking shield per line.
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill we will work on our COORDINATION by practicing our Left and Right, as well as, our gross motor development and Eye-Body COORDINATION.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – Instead of saying a direction, the instructor can just say “go” in order to try to trick the students. Or, the instructor can say words that sound like their directions, like “might” or “lift” to trick the students. This will further enhance their auditory processing, as they will work on their ability to analyze what is being said, instead of just listening to the sounds of the words.
Brain SKILLZ:
” SPEED OF PROCESSING – The students must be able to hear the instructor call out a direction, race down to the pad, circle around the pad from the correct side, and race back to their line. This works on their ability to complete a task quickly and accurately, as they have to be the first one back who did it correctly in order to earn a point. ”
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Set out 1 cone for each line on the opposite end of the mat
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The first student in each line will grab the pad/cart with both hands, keeping it on the floor at all times.
  • The instructor will then call “Left” or “Right”.
  • Students will have to run/push the cart/pad down the mat and around the cone, entering from the side called by the instructor.
  • Then race all the way back, the first to cross the finish line gets a point for their team.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Have strong arms as you steer the scooter.
  • Keep your eyes open as you drive.
  • Keep going even if you’re tired
Step 5
  • Continue until everyone has 2-3 turns
