Skill: Coordination
Drill: Grab the Block
Equipment needed: Two foam block and one wave cushion per group
Instructors needed: One per group
Description: In this drill the students will build their coordination by knowing which object is on their left and which object is on their right.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can see which partner is going to be faster. After one student wins, encourage the students to give each other a high five and say good job in order to encourage healthy competition with their friends, and good sportsmanship.
Brain SKILLZ:
RESPONSE INHIBITION – The student has to hear the instructor call out a direction, and pick that correct block, without worrying about the person across from them. If they try to go for the same block that their partner goes for, then they will grab the wrong block. This works on the ability to complete a task accurately despite distraction, the distraction being their partner being across from them and grabbing a different block; they do not want to copy their partner.
Step 1
Pair up your students with a partner and divide the partners up into groups with no more than four pairs per group. (Recommended maximum instructor-student ratio for this age group.)
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each group, set up a station with a wave cushion with two small blocks. Have one student stand on each side.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor call out “left” or “right” and you have to grab the proper block.
  • Keep in mind that your partner’s left and right are on the opposite side from you, therefore should be grabbing the opposite block.
  • The student to grab the proper block first gets a point.
  • If you grab the wrong block, then you lose a point.
  • The first person to three points is the winner.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Focus on coordination by working on left and right
  • Work on being faster than your partner
Step 5
  • Continue until each pair has at least two turns.
