Skill: Coordination
Drill: Bag Bash
Equipment needed: 1 kicking shield per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will build their COORDINATION and spatial awareness by using long techniques (I.e. punches & kicks) and short techniques (I.e. elbows & knees) without being too far or too close to the bag.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – On the second round, the instructor can ask if they would like to do the combination forwards or backwards. The choice will empower the students and motivate them to do well during this drill.
Brain SKILLZ:
WORKING MEMORY – The students must be able to perform two punches, elbows, knee strikes, and front kicks on a pad. This works on their ability to hold onto information while performing a task, as there are four different techniques they must remember to do in a certain order.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have 1 instructor per one hold a kicking shield.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When the instructor says “go” the first person in line will begin.
  • Perform 2 punches, 2 elbows, 2 knee strikes, and 2 front kicks.
  • Make sure to move closer or farther away from the pad depending on your technique.
  • If you miss the pad you must start from the beginning.
  • Have each student go 2 times and then return to the end of the line.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Remember to step when moving toward and away from the pad instead of jumping.
  • Be sure to show good COORDINATION by hitting with the correct part of your body.
  • Try your best to not pause between strikes.
  • On the second time around try to hit the pad harder!
Step 5
  • Continue for 2-3 rounds.
