Drill: Mirror Catches
Equipment needed: One ball per line
Instructors needed: 1 per line
Description: The purpose of this drill is to teach the ability to adapt using good hand eye coordination.
Teaching SKILLZ: Extrinsic Motivation
Instruction: “If you catch the ball 3 times in a row, I’ll do 3 squat jumps!” This creates excitement, reward anticipation, and external motivation to focus and succeed.
Brain SKILLZ: Visual Processing
Students must visually track the ball’s reflection and predict its bounce, strengthening their ability to interpret and respond to fast-changing visual cues.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2
Have the student stand next to the instructor facing the mirror.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • l will throw the ball at an upward angle toward the mirror so that it bounces back towards you.
  • You must catch the ball.
  • Your goal is to catch the ball 3 times in a row.
Step 3 – Takeaways
  • Watch the ball the whole time.
  • Keep your hands out and ready to catch.
  • Move around if the ball goes in a different direction.
Step 4
  • Continue until every group has three turns.
Step 5
  • To make this more challenging have the students stand behind the instructor.
