Drill: Color Combo Kicks
Equipment needed: 3 different colored cones, 3 orange cones, 1 Wavemaster per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill we will be using our short term MEMORY to remember color combinations and long term MEMORY to remember how to properly perform our round kicks.
Teaching SKILLZ:
SKILLZ: HEALTHY COMPETITION – The student to finish their turn the fastest will get a point for their team, and the team at the end of the drill with the most points will win. The instructor can also give the teams silly names, like “hamburgers vs. hotdogs” in order to help motivate the students to win as a team and keep the students engaged.
Brain SKILLZ:
WORKING MEMORY – The student must be able to listen to the order of the colors called, and they have to place the cones down in that order. This works on their ability to hold onto information while performing a task, as they have to remember a pattern.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line set 3 orange cones in even intervals down the mat. Place the 3 different colored cones at the start of each line.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Listen carefully because the instructor will call out a color combination.
  • You must run to the first orange cone and place the first color on top.
  • Then run to the second orange cone and place the second color on top.
  • Finally run to the third orange cone and place the third colored cone on top.
  • Finish by kicking the wavemaster with 10 round kicks and sitting back in your line.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Go fast so you can be the first to finish
  • Use my eyes and spot your target
  • Put the cones back quickly so you don’t waste time
Step 5
  • Continue until everyone has 2-3 turns through the line.
