Skill: Memory
Drill: Spell It
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: Students will practice MEMORY by demonstrating their ability to spell out their name as they add a basic with every letter of their name. This will challenge the students mentally by requiring them to quickly have to demonstrate different moves and spell their name at the same time.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student messes up their name or they do a technique wrong, then they have three jumping jacks.
Brain SKILLZ:
LONG TERM MEMORY – The student must remember how to spell their name, as well as remember all of their techniques. This would be an example of using their semantic (spelling their name) and episodic (doing a martial arts technique) memory, and this drill works on recalling information that they have previously learned.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Students will start facing the instructor.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The 1st student will stand up and face the instructor.
  • When the instructor says “GO” the student will do 1 karate move and say the 1st letter of their name.
  • They will continue doing moves with letters until they finish spelling their name.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Be loud so we know you’re confident.
  • Be strong with every move you use!
  • Be fast and try to spell your name
Step 5
  • Continue until each person get 2-3 turns.
