Skill: MEMORY
Drill: MEMORY Stash
Equipment needed: 1 dodgeball/pad for each student
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: Students will work on their MEMORY by having to remember how to break down their karate basics, and demonstrate each breakdown to the instructor.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The team with the most dodgeballs at the end of the round is the winning team. The instructor can also give the teams silly names, like “hamburgers vs. hot dogs” in order to motivate the students to win as a team, as well as keep the students engaged.
Brain SKILLZ:
LONG TERM MEMORY – The student must be able to remember the three parts to the move that they are asked to perform, and do the technique correctly. This works on their ability to recall information that they have learned in the past, as they must be able to do the correct chamber depending on which move the instructor calls out.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
The instructor for each line will be the Guardian, they will have the dodgeballs for their line.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Starting with strikes, have everyone stand then follow and repeat after you as you break a Punch, Knifehand, and Backfist into 3 steps, 3 times each.
  • After that the game begins once everyone is sitting and the instructor says “go”
  • The first person will run to the instructor/Guardian who will then ask to see one of the techniques we broke down and The first person will run to the instructor/Guardian who will then ask to see one of the techniques we broke down.
  • If they can, they will get one ball to take back to their line, if they cannot or make a mistake, they must run to the end of the line.
  • Continue to go through the line, giving those who didn’t get a ball the first time a second chance. The game ends when one team has all their dodgeballs
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Do your best to remember each step.
  • Say each step loudly and confidently to show great MEMORY.
  • If you don’t get it the first time, ask someone in your line for a refresher!
Step 5
  • Continue for 2-3 games.
