Equipment needed:
One large kicking target per line
Instructors needed:
1 Per line
Description:
In this drill the students will practice their memory skills. The students must remember an order of Martial Arts moves. If they do, then they get to “squish” the giant. This builds short-term memory, which is being able to recall something for a short period of time before dismissing it.
Teaching SKILLZ: Extrinsic Motivation
If you strike the right combo, you get to squish the giant! That means I fall down and you win this round!” This playful reward system builds excitement and encourages accuracy.
Brain SKILLZ: Working Memory
Students must remember the sequence of moves and execute them in order under pressure while moving across the mat.
Step 1
Divide your class into even lines on one end of the training mat, and for each line have an instructor hold a slammer pad on the opposite end of the mat.
Step 2 – Explain the Rules:
I will call out a 3-move combination.
You will race to me and strike my pad with the combination of moves.
If you strike my pad with the proper combination, in order, then I will fall onto the ground and you get to “squish” me. If you do not get the combination correct, then you must go to the end of the line and wait for your next turn to try again.
Step 3
You can make this drill more challenging by making the second round a 4-move combination and so forth.
