Skill: Memory
Drill: Chamber Wave
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: 1 Per Group
Description: Students will work on their MEMORY by performing The Wave with their martial arts basics concentrating on remembering their chambers.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can have the students race as a team to see if they can do their move around the circle under a certain time limit, without breaking the wave; the first round having ten seconds, the second having eight seconds, and the third round having seven seconds, depending on how big the class is.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The students must be able to see when their turn is, and do it correctly and quickly so they do not break the wave. This works on their ability to make sense of what they see and participate in visual activities, as they must watch the wave go around the circle, and when the person next to them goes, then they can go.
Step 1
Split your class into groups
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have each group form a large circle.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor will start The Wave by performing a chamber and technique i.e “Chamber, Punch”
  • The student to their right will then repeat, “Chamber, Punch”
  • This will continue all the way back around to the instructor.
  • Continue until you have done all your strikes and blocks.
  • For a bonus challenge, add in kicks saying “Chamber, Kick, Rechamber, Down”
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Be ready to go so you don’t break The Wave.
  • Say each portion confidently!
  • If you get confused, watch those that go before you.
Step 5
  • Continue for multiple rounds!
