Skill: Agility
Drill: Off the Line
Equipment needed: Two blocker targets per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students are going to practice sliding left and right avoiding a target while maintaining agility.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student gets hit with the noodle, then they have five pushups. If the student is able to complete their turn without getting hit, then the instructor has five pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to see which noodle is swinging towards them, and step to the correct direction in order to dodge it. This works on their ability to make sense of what they see, and respond to visual cues.
Step 1
Divide your students into several lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line, the instructors will hold blocker targets in each hand.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructors will swing either the left or right blocker pad straight down towards the students head.
  • The student will slide left if the instructor swings the left pad, or right if the instructor swings the right pad.
  • Give the student three swings.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Make sure you are emphasizing smooth motion, sliding with the appropriate footwork, and maintaining a strong guarding stance throughout the drill.
Step 5
  • You can add onto the drill by having the student execute a rear leg round counter kick to the instructor’s mid-section (no contact).
