Skill: AGILITY
Drill: Step Behind Kicks
Equipment needed: Two slammer pads per group
Instructors needed: 2 per group
Description: In this drill the students will practice stepping behind their kicking leg when executing power side-kicks on both sides. This is a great drill for building both agility and power.
Teaching SKILLZ: Modeling
demonstrate a strong step-behind side kick with balance and chamber so students can clearly see the proper sequence before trying it themselves.
Brain SKILLZ: Divided Attention
students must focus on coordinating multiple movements at once (step behind, chamber, re-chamber, and reset) while maintaining balance and power.
Step 1
Divide your students into several groups. Demonstrate the proper way to step behind your kicking leg when executing power side-kicks.
Step 2
  • Pick one student from each group to go first. Set up one instructor on each side of the slammer pad as shown in the picture.
Step 3
  • The student will practice stepping behind their kicking leg and side kick the target as hard as possible, but then they must re-chamber their kicking leg and place it behind their next kicking leg and so forth until they kick each target four times.
Step 4
  • For every time they do not step behind their kicking leg, they must do five jumping jacks.
Step 5
  • This is a challenging drill for some because they will step behind their kicking leg on the first kick, but some tend to lose balance and agility once they strike the target and that’s when they make mistakes.
