Skill: Agility
Drill: Foot Snaps
Equipment needed: Clapper pads and bean bags (for each pair)
Instructors needed: One or two depending on the size of the class
Description: In this drill the students will try to slap their partner’s foot with a pad while they move their foot without losing position or balance.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can give the students a choice of “slow”, “medium”, “fast”, or “ninja fast”. This will empower the students as they have some control over what they are doing in the activity, and will motivate the students more to complete the task since they chose what to do.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student must be able to see the pad coming towards their foot, as well as hear the instructor call out “left” or “right”, and respond appropriately. This works on their ability to complete a task quickly and accurately, as well as make the correct choices quickly, as if they move the wrong leg or move their leg too slow, they will get hit with the pad.
Step 1
Divide your class into pairs. Give each pair one clapper pad.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Give each pair one clapper pad.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • (Facing each other) One student will sit on his (or her) knees with a clapper pad in hand. The other will stand in guarding stance.
  • You will call out “left” or “right” and the person with the clapper target will try to slap his (or her) partner on the correct foot, while the person standing will attempt to move his (or her) foot without getting slapped.
  • Switch partners and repeat the drill.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Make sure you are teaching the students how to move their feet without losing balance or position.
Step 5
  • Explain the concept of keeping a low center of gravity.
