Skill: Agility
Drill: Rocket Switches
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill we will be working on AGILITY with our footwork by practicing fast switches, racing across the mat to our pad holders where we will perform punches and then racing back to be the winner.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can say things like “ghost” and “gogurt” in order to try and trick the students. This will enhance their auditory processing skills as they have to listen for the whole word, and not just the sounds in the word.
Brain SKILLZ:
AUDITORY PROCESSING – The student must hear the instructor say “go”, start their switches, and wait for the second “go” to run. This works on their ability to respond to audio cues quickly and accurately.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have 1 instructor per line on the opposite side of the mat.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Have the first student in line stand and go to their guarding stance.
  • The instructor will then say “go” and students will begin switching their feet.
  • Continue to switch until the instructor says “go” a second time.
  • Then race down the mat and perform 10 kicks for your instructor.
  • The first person to return and sit strong wins a point for their line.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Keep moving and don’t anticipate the call
  • Try to be the fastest
  • Count loud each time
Step 5
  • Continue for at least 2-3 games.
