Drill: East, West
Equipment needed: Two kicking targets per line
Instructors needed: Two per line
Description: The student will kick the target turning in the east and west directions using the same leg to help build their agility.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can say one direction, and point to another direction in order to trick the students. This will improve their auditory processing further, as they must focus on the verbal cue and disregard the visual cue in order to not get tricked.
AUDITORY PROCESSING – This works on their ability to respond to verbal commands quickly and accurately, as they must listen for the instructor to call “east” or “west”, and kick the corresponding bag.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line, you will need two instructors holding a kicking target on the east (right) side and west (left) side of the student.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When I say “go” you will kick the target on the east (right) side with your right leg, and then turn to the west (left) side and kick with your right leg, putting your foot down before you turn directions.
  • You will continue to kick to the east and west directions ten times and then have a seat.
  • The first person to sit is the winner.
  • You can make it a challenge by telling them not to put their foot down as they switch directions.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Learn the directions east and west
  • Respond to verbal commands
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has two turns. Make sure the students use their left leg on their second turn.
