Skill: Agility
Drill: Flipping Kicks
Equipment needed: One kicking target per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will kick the pad while alternating legs but only have one leg on the ground to help build their agility.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can give the lines silly names, like “hamburgers vs. Hotdogs” in order to motivate the students to win as a team. The instructor can also spotlight a student who is doing their kicks well, and say “who can have better kicks than ___?” This will help motivate the students to have better kicks than that one person, since at this stage of development, students want to be in the spotlight, and they are naturally competitive.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student must be able to complete their kicks as quick as they can, as they can only have one foot on the ground at a time. This works on their ability to complete a task quickly and accurately, since if they are slow to kick, they might fall off balance or lose the race.
Step 1
Divide your students into even lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line you will need an instructor to hold a kicking target.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When I say “go” you will kick the pad alternating legs, but you can only have one leg on the ground at a time.
  • Once you kick the pad ten times then have a seat.
  • The person to sit first is the winner.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Continue until each student has at least two turns.
Step 5
  • Front kicks or round kicks work best.
