Drill: Grab the Pads
Equipment needed: 3 small square pads per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: Students will practice having good rolling by being able to pencil roll to the correct pad.
Teaching SKILLZ:
INTRINSIC MOTIVATION – On the second round, the instructor can ask the students if they want to be even more ninja, and give them a combination of numbers instead of just one, which would also challenge their working memory.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to see the pad the instructor called, and roll to the correct pad and grab it, and roll back to the beginning of their line. Because it is hard to orientate themselves while rolling, it improves their ability to make sense of what they see.
Step 1
Separate your students into lines, based off of how many instructors you have.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
The Instructor will line the pads up in front of the student about 1ft apart from each other.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor will give the pads a number: 1, 2, 3.
  • When the instructor calls out a number the student will have to pencil roll to the correct pad and grab it.
  • On the next round the instructor will call out 2 numbers, and the student will have to roll and grab the pads in order.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Roll as fast as you can so that you can get stronger.
  • Keep your eyes open so that you can see the pads that you need to grab.
  • Keep your hands tight together so that you don’t drop the pads as you roll.
Step 5
  • Continue for 2-3 turns.
