Skill: Rollin
Drill: Pass the Giant
Equipment needed: Two wave bags or cones and one large ball
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will practice rolling a large ball between the giant’s (instructor) “gate” while he attempts to force the student to change directions of the rolling ball. This is a great drill for hand-eye-coordination, control, and spatial awareness.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student can successfully roll the ball through the gate, the instructor will do three pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student must be able to quickly react to the giant moving around, and roll the ball in a different direction instead. This works on their ability to make correct choices quickly.
Step 1
Divide your class into even lines with no more than four students per line and line them up on one end of the mat. Give the first person in each line a large ball.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
On the opposite end of the mat, set up a “gate” with cones or wave bags. Have a giant stand and guard the gate.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The giant is guarding his gate.
  • You must roll the ball down the mat and get the ball through the gate.
  • If the giant steps in your way, you must roll the ball the other way until you find a spot to roll the ball through.
  • Giants are very slow so use your rolling skills to try and trick him when you get to the gate.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Learn to change directions in mid-roll
  • Work on hand-eye coordination
  • Work on spatial awarness
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least three turns.
