Drill: Duck the Sword
Equipment needed: 1 Mitt & Foam Noodle Per Line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice PUNCHING by demonstrating their ability to duck under a noodle and return fire with a punch. This will challenge their physical and intellectual stages of development by requiring the students to time the noodle and fire back with a strong punch.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student can duck the noodle every time without getting hit, the instructor will do three pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to see the noodle coming and duck before it hits them.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line, you will need an instructor holding the pads for each student.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The 1st student will stand in their guarding stance facing the instructor.
  • When the instructor swings the noodle at the student’s head, the student must duck the noodle.
  • Once the noodle is clear the student will stand up straight and punch the instructor’s mitt.
  • The student will alternate punches for 10 swings then go to the end of their line.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Keep fists as tight as you can.
  • Make sure you move your head out of the way.
  • Hit the target in the middle for the best results.
Step 5
  • Continue so that each student has at least 2 turns.
