Drill: Blindfold Punches
Equipment needed: 1 small target/1 Blindfold per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice having good PUNCHING by demonstrating their ability to strike a target while blindfolded. This will challenge them mentally by requiring them to remember where the target is after they place the blindfold on.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student is able to hit the pad all ten times while blindfolded, the instructor will do five pushups.
WORKING MEMORY – The student must be able to remember where the target was originally, and strike in that spot despite not being able to see it; this challenges their ability to construct a cognitive map of where the pad is in relation to them.
Step 1
Have students divide into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
The 1st student will stand up and face the instructor.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • They will do 3 punches with the blindfold off, then the student will place the blindfold on.
  • When the instructor counts, the students will try to strike the target 10 times.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Hit the pad as many times as possible.
  • Hands up to keep your face protected.
  • Do your best even if you miss the pad a few times.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has 2 turns.
