Description:
In this drill the students will punch the focus mitts as they spell the word “cat” and “dog.” This is a great drill for teaching the students how to spell while also learning how to punch.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student can spell 3 words in a row correctly, then the instructor will do 3 push-ups.
Brain SKILLZ:
DIVIDED ATTENTION – This student will focus on punching while also spelling.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Demonstrate the drill first by punching the focus mitts (alternating hands) while saying one letter per punch spelling the word c-a-t.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
The first time through the line, the instructor will say each letter and the students will punch the mitt while repeating each letter.
The second time through the line, see if they can spell the word on their own.
Repeat the drill spelling the word “dog.”
You can add variety to the drill by spelling other words too.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
Focus on spelling by repeating letters.
Learn to spell simple words on your own.
Step 5
Continue until each student has at least two turns.
