Drill: C-A-T,D-O-G
Equipment needed: Two focus mitts per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will punch the focus mitts as they spell the word “cat” and “dog.” This is a great drill for teaching the students how to spell while also learning how to punch.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student can spell 3 words in a row correctly, then the instructor will do 3 push-ups.
Brain SKILLZ:
DIVIDED ATTENTION – This student will focus on punching while also spelling.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Demonstrate the drill first by punching the focus mitts (alternating hands) while saying one letter per punch spelling the word c-a-t.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The first time through the line, the instructor will say each letter and the students will punch the mitt while repeating each letter.
  • The second time through the line, see if they can spell the word on their own.
  • Repeat the drill spelling the word “dog.”
  • You can add variety to the drill by spelling other words too.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Focus on spelling by repeating letters.
  • Learn to spell simple words on your own.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least two turns.
