Mat Chat – 3-minutes (Includes Water Break)
  • Today we are going to work on bear MOMENTUM.
  • MOMENTUM means maximizing force and speed in movement.
  • This is important because you need MOMENTUM to jump high and kick fast.

Here are the three ways that we are going to improve your MOMENTUM skills today:

1. Using MOMENTUM while spinning. 2. Using MOMENTUM while gaining distance. 3. Using MOMENTUM while jumping.
Skill-Building Drills – 15 Minutes

Higher and Higher:

Students will practice having good MOMENTUM by demonstrating their ability to use their upward momentum to jump front kick a pad that steadily gets higher and higher.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: NEUROBICS – As the student comes down, the instructor can pick a category of things for the students to say as they kick the pad. The instructor can pick the category of “colors”, or “animated movies” and the students will run to the pad and say something that belongs to that category, like “yellow” or “Finding Nemo”.
  • Brain SKILLZ: VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to see how high the pad is, and determine the appropriate amount of power in order to kick the pad with good technique.

Barrel Jumps:

Students will work on their ability to jump over obstacles that progressively get higher until there is one person that can make it.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: CHOICES – The instructor can ask the student how fast they would like the barrel to roll towards them. This will help the students who are a little worried about the drill have more confidence, since they were able to have some control over how fast it rolls. It will also give the students who want an extra challenge an opportunity to make things harder.
  • Brain SKILLZ: VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to see when the barrel rolls towards them and jump over it at the right time, so they don’t get hit with the barrel.
Partner Stretches: 5-minutes
  • Kicking stretch
  • Laying hip stretch
  • Lay on the rock
  • Rocking straddle stretch
