Skill: Crawling
Drill: Get Away
Equipment needed: 1 Yoga Ball per Line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice CRAWLING by demonstrating a bear crawl moving as fast as they can away from the yoga ball. This will challenge the students physically by having them moving quickly away from a moving object without falling.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can say words that sound like “go”, like “ghost” or “gopher”, in order to try and trick the students. This will help the students improve their auditory processing, as they must listen for the whole word and analyze what it means, instead of just listening for the sounds of a word.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student must be able to crawl fast enough so that they do not get hit by the ball. This works on their ability to complete a task quickly and accurately, as if they pause or if they fall from their bear crawl, the ball will catch up to them and they will get caught.
Step 1
Divide your students into pairs.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line, you will need an instructor.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The 1st student in line will get into a bear crawl position.
  • When the instructor says “GO” they will push the yoga ball after the student.
  • The student wants to quickly go away from the ball, if the student can make it to the other side of the mat they are safe.
  • If the student is hit by the ball they must do 3 push-ups before going to the end of the line.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Don’t fall or the ball might hit you.
  • Keep your eyes ahead if you look back the ball might hit you.
  • Don’t stop moving, you want to go as fast as you can.
Step 5
  • Continue so that each student has at least 2 turns.
