Skill: Crawling
Drill: Figure 8’s
Equipment needed: 2 Cones Per Line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: Students will practice CRAWLING by demonstrating their ability to crawl for an extended period of time. This will challenge them physically by requiring them to engage their core by not dropping their knees.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can say words that sound like “go”, like “ghost” or “gopher”, in order to try and trick the students. This will help the students improve their auditory processing, as they must listen for the whole word and analyze what it means, instead of just listening for the sounds of a word.
Brain SKILLZ:
ATTENTION CONTROL – The students must be able to keep bear crawling in the correct pattern without letting their knees touch the ground. This works on their ability to focus on a task for an extended period of time, as they cannot fall from their bear crawl position or mess up the pattern.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have the 2 cone about 6’ apart on the same line.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The 1st student will face the cones in a bear crawl position.
  • When the instructor says “GO” the student will crawl in between the cones and around the far cone.
  • They will continue going back through the cones and around the 2nd cone, making a figure 8.
  • They will continue making this pattern 3 times trying not to fall, if they fall then they must start over.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Crawl fast so you get stronger.
  • Don’t use your knees.
  • Keep your eyes up so you don’t hit a cone.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student gets 2 turns.
