Skill: CRAWLING
Drill: Gargoyles
Equipment needed: 1 small tower or kicking shield per line
Instructors needed: One per line
Description: Students will practice CRAWLING by demonstrating their ability to crawl to an object and quickly get themselves on to the object. This will challenge them physically by requiring them to perform difficult movements while they are crawling.
Teaching SKILLZ: EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION
  • If the student falls off of the pad, or if they fall from their bear crawl position, then they have to restart.
Brain SKILLZ: ATTENTION CONTROL
  • The student has to bear crawl down to their pad without letting their knees touch the ground. This works on their ability to focus on a task for an extended period of time, as they cannot fall from their bear crawl position while playing this game.
Step 1
  • Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting up the Drill:
  • Have the students stand up and face their tower.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Students will get into their bear crawl position and face the tower.
  • When the instructor says ‘GO” students will have to crawl down to their tower, without using their knees.
  • When they get to the tower the students will have to get on top of the tower and sit like a “gargoyle”.
  • Then the students will crawl off the pad and return back to their line!
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Keep your belt up so your belly stays off the ground
  • Use your hands and feet as you crawl.
  • Use your eyes so you know where to crawl.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has 2-3 turns.
