Drill: Grab the Ball
Equipment needed: One Wavemaster and two dodgeballs for each line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: Students will work on their REACTION by switching from doing round kicks on a target to catching a ball thrown from either side of them. This will test them intellectually because they need to switch what they are doing at a quick speed.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can give the lines silly names, like “Hamburgers vs. Hotdogs” in order to motivate the students to win as a team. The team with the most points at the end of the game will win.
Brain SKILLZ:
AUDITORY PROCESSING – The students must listen for the instructor to call out “left” or “right”, grab the correct ball, and pass it to the next person in line. This works on their ability to respond to audio cues and analyze what they hear.
Step 1
Pull out a Wavemaster for each line
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have a dodgeball on the left and right side of the pad with one student by each ball
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The students will start doing round kicks on the pad
  • The instructor will call out left or right
  • Whatever side the instructor calls, the student with the ball will throw it at the kicker
  • The kicker must stop kicking and catch the ball
  • If the kicker can catch the ball five times, the instructor will do five push-ups
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Listen so you know when to stop kicking
  • Turn quick so you can find the ball
  • Keep your eye on the ball so you can track it down without dropping it
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has had 2-3 turns
