Skill: REACTION
Drill: Stopping Power
Equipment needed: 1 kicking shield per line
Instructors needed: 1 per line
Description: Students will practice having good reaction by being able to do a jump turn side kick on a moving target.
Teaching SKILLZ: Intrinsic Motivation
encourage students to push themselves to master each progression (regular side kick → step turn side kick → jump turn side kick) for their own sense of achievement and growth.
Brain SKILLZ: Working Memory
students must remember the sequence of kicks as the drill progresses and apply each step while tracking and reacting to the moving target.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Explain the Rules
  • The first student in each line will come up.
  • The instructor will slowly start walking towards them.
  • On the first-round students will do a regular side kick 3 times. For the second round they will do a step turn side kick three times, building up to that jump turn side kick.
  • The student will do a jump spin side kick hitting the pad. They will do this about 3 times down the mat.
  • If the student feels up to it have them try the other leg on the second round.
Step 3 – Take Aways
  • Chamber so that your kick has power.
  • Turn fast so that you can gain momentum
  • Look with your eyes so that you can see the target.
Step 4
  • Continue for 2-3 turns.
