Skill: Reaction
Drill: Chop Suey
Equipment needed: One blindfold and foam sword per line
Instructors needed: 1 per line
Description: The students have to avoid being chopped in the head by th instructors.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can let the students choose what speed they would like to go: slow, medium, or fast. The choice in the activity will empower the students, as they will feel more in control over what they are doing.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must watch the noodle and see when it comes towards their head, so they are able to dodge it. This works on their ability to respond quickly to visual cues.
Step 1
Divide the class into even lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line you will need an instructor to hold a foam sword.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When I say “go” the instructor will swing the foam sword straight down towards your head.
  • You will have to react and dodge to your left or right while trying to avoid getting hit in the head.
  • If you get hit, then you have to do 5 push-ups.
  • You will try to dodge the sword five times.
  • Continue until each student has at least three turns.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • To work on visual cues and respond to attacks
Step 5
  • To make it fun, have the students and instructors switch roles.
