Drill: Rodeo
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: Multiple to Monitor
Description: The students will practice REACTION by trying to escape from an unsafe position where their opponent is in a full mount position on top of them, their goal is to get their partner off them.
Teaching SKILLZ: HEALTHY COMPETITION
  • The instructor will challenge the students to not let their partners win the drill the loser must do 5 of an exercise.
Brain SKILLZ: ATTENTION CONTROL
  • The students will work on staying focused on being able to get themselves out of the bad situation without losing focus on what is going on.
Step 1
  • Have the students form partnerships.
Step 2 – Explain the Rules:
  • The students will spread out on the mat with their partners.
  • 1 student will start by laying down on their back, the other student will sit with their knees on the ground sitting on their partner’s stomach.
  • When the instructor says “GO” the student on bottom will have 10-15 seconds to escape from under their partner.
  • If the student is successful their partner has 5 of an exercise, if their partner can keep them on the ground the other person has 5 of an exercise.
  • Make sure to switch positions after each round..
Step 3 – Takeaways:
  • Keep your knees wide to have good balance.
  • Make sure you are constantly moving on the bottom.
  • Don’t give up even if you don’t feel like you’re winning.
Step 4
  • Continue until each student has multiple turns.
