Skill: Flexibility
Drill: Over the Pad
Equipment needed: One wave bag cushion or chair per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will build their flexibility by kicking over the cushion in a circular motion, also called an outside crescent kick. This is a dynamic flexibility exercise.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can give the students a choice of which leg they would want to use first, and how high of an object they want to use. This will motivate the students and empower them, since they had a choice in the activity at hand and will feel more in control in what they are doing.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to see the pad in front of them, and estimate how high they will have to kick in order to kick over the pad. This works on their ability to participate in visual activities, as they are not allowed to kick the pad, and must kick over it.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line, set up a wave bag cushion or chair.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • You will kick over the cushion on a circular motion (outside crescent kick) with your right leg.
  • Do ten kicks while trying not to stop too long in between each kick.
  • Your goal is to execute ten kicks as quickly as possible without touching the pad with your leg.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Keep your toes pointed at the ceiling when you kick.
  • Kick high and fast but don’t lose technique.
  • Keep your back straight as you kick.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has a turn with both legs.
