Skill: Flexibility
Drill: Stretch It Out
Equipment needed: A chair or something to hold onto for each line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: This drill will be targeting the skill FLEXIBILTY by stretching their legs to improve kicking height and speed. This challenges their emotional stage of development to try and challenge students to stay strong even if it’s not the most comfortable situation.
Teaching SKILLZ:
INTRINSIC MOTIVATION – On the second round, the instructor can explain to the students that if they hold their leg up for ten seconds, they will make their instructors proud. If they are able to hold their leg up for fifteen seconds, then they will make their parents proud too. If they are able to hold their leg up for twenty seconds, they will make themselves proud too.
Brain SKILLZ:
RESPONSE INHIBITION – The student has to hold their leg up on the instructor’s shoulder. This works on their ability to complete a task despite distraction, the distraction being how uncomfortable their leg might be.
Step 1
Divide your students into even lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Give each line a chair.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Each student will come up and put one hand on the chair the other up by their face.
  • The student will then put their foot on their instructors shoulder in a side kick position.
  • The instructor will then stand up slowly until the student says stop when it starts to become too uncomfortable.
  • The students will then try to lift their foot a few inches off the instructors’ shoulder 5 times.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Make sure when you are stretching it is not painful, but simply uncomfortable.
  • Remember to keep your leg straight.
  • Count each rep nice and loud!
Step 5
  • Continue until every student has 2-3 turns.
