Skill: Flexibility
Drill: Ring Claps
Equipment needed: 1 small ring per group
Instructors needed: A few to monitor
Description: The students will work on their flexibility by working together to help each other stretch. This will help build awareness on whether or not they are bending their knees when they stretch.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can ask the students to pick a partner in ten seconds. This gives them the chance to work with the people they want to work with, which can motivate them to win with their friend. The choice in the activity will also empower the students, as they will feel more in control over what they are doing.
Brain SKILLZ:
DIVIDED ATTENTION – The student must reach over the ring and clap their partner’s hand, while keeping their other hand on the ring as well as keeping their legs straight. This works on their ability to do more than one thing at one time.
Step 1
Divide your students into pairs.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have each pair line up in the middle of the mat.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Have everyone sit, with the soles of their feet touching their partners’.
  • They will each hold onto one side of their ring.
  • Without dropping the ring, they must clap hands 10 times alternating L/R.
  • If they drop the ring, they must start over.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Keep your legs straight the whole time.
  • Reach with your hands and clap in the middle.
  • Take your time, don’t go fast.
Step 5
  • Continue for 15,20,25 claps.
