Skill: Flexibility
Drill: Pass the Pad
Equipment needed: One pad per group
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will build flexibility in their middle stretch while passing the pad to the person next to them.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can give the groups silly names, like “hamburgers vs. hot dogs” in order to motivate the students to try hard and win as a team. The instructor can also say “who can get the lowest in their middle splits: his team, or this team?” This can help the students get lower in their splits since they want to get lower than the other team.
Brain SKILLZ:
RESPONSE INHIBITION – The student must stay in their split for the entire duration. This works on the ability to complete a task despite distraction, the distraction being any discomfort they may feel from stretching.
Step 1
Divide your students into several even groups.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have the students make a circle.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Spread your legs apart until your palms can touch the floor.
  • Lock your knees.
  • Make sure your hips remain over your knees.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • One student will start to pass the pad to their right.
  • Once the pad reaches back to the starting student, you will pass the pad to the left.
  • If you drop the pad, then the group must start over.
  • The group that finishes passing the pad all the way around their right and left is the winner.
Step 5
  • Continue until each group does this drill twice. We just happened to have an even amount of girls as boys this day which made the competition even more fun.
