Skill: Flexibility
Drill: Pump It Up
Equipment needed: 1 Kicking Shield, 1 Clapper pad per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill we will be developing stronger FLEXIBILITY with our multiple kicks while focusing on changing levels.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student drops their knee/leg, or they do the wrong kicks, then the student has five pushups. If the student is able to complete their turn successfully with good technique, then the instructor will have five pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
AUDITORY PROCESSING – The student must be able to hear the instructor call out “head” or “body”, and do the appropriate kick at the appropriate level. This works on their ability to follow verbal commands.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have 1 instructor per line hold the kicking shield with the clapper pad on top
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor will call 2-kick combinations.
  • Head = Round kick // Body = Side Kick
  • You must perform the combo without dropping or swinging your knee.
  • On Round 2, move on to 3-kick combinations
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Chamber each kick for the best technique
  • Kick fast because your target might change and make you miss
  • Be sure to aim and hit the correct target
Step 5
  • Continue until everyone get 2-3 turns through the line.
