  • FOCUS means to pay attention with your eyes, ears, and body.

Here are three FOCUS tips that you will learn today:

1. FOCUS with your eyes by looking at people when they talk to you and also looking at what you are doing. 2. FOCUS with your body by being aware of where your body is. 3. FOCUS with your ears by listening to what others say.
Skill-Building Drills – 15 Minutes

Blind Defense:

In this drill the students will work on developing better FOCUS by learning to perform their self-defense combinations on both the dominant and non-dominant sides.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student can escape all three times, then the instructor will have 5 pushups.
  • Brain SKILLZ: LONG TERM MEMORY – The student must be able to remember the defense for the grabs, and remembering to say “stay back” once they complete the defense.

Crawl, Kick, Jump Relay:

In this drill the students will apply focus to a fun relay race. The students will race to crawl under an obstacle, kick a target ten times and then jump over the obstacle. This is a fun drill that builds focus with their body.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can give the lines silly team names like “hamburgers vs. hot dogs” to motivate the students to win as a team.
  • Brain SKILLZ: WORKING MEMORY – The student must be able to remember the steps to the race (crawling under the bar, doing ten kicks, jumping over the bar, running back) while racing other teams.
