  • Today we are going to work on CONTROL and MEMORY.
  • CONTROL means to have power over your mind, heart, and body.
  • MEMORY means to put things in one ear and not let them come out the other ear.
  • We are going to run one CONTROL drill and one MEMORY drill, and then review the testing requirements for both SKILLZ.
Skill-Building Drills – 10 Minutes

Dizzy Race:

In this drill the students will develop better control of their body by racing down the training mat, spinning their head around a blocker target four times, and then kicking a target ten times. This is a fun way to teach your students to control their body.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can award a point to the student sitting the strongest the fastest. The team at the end of the game that has the most points wins, and the instructor can give the teams silly names like “hamburgers vs. hot dogs” in order to motivate the students.
  • Brain SKILLZ: VISUAL PROCESSING – By spinning in multiple circles, and then running down and doing kicks, this drill challenges their visual processing since it works on their ability to make sense of what they see.

Circle of Friends:

In this drill the students will put their reactive memory skills to the test by kicking pads held by their classmates in a specific order.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: INTRINSIC MOTIVATION – The instructor can ask the students if they want a harder challenge. If they say yes, then the instructor can say four names at a time. On the third round, the instructor can ask the students if they want a blackbelt challenge, and give them five names at a time.
  • Brain SKILLZ: WORKING MEMORY – The student must be able to listen to the order of the names called, and kick the pads in that order. This works on their ability to hold onto information while performing a task, as they have to remember a pattern.
