Skill: Speed
Drill: Suh-Wing!
Equipment needed: 3 small pads per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill we will be working on building better reactive SPEED by having to move to the optimal position and kick a pad that is thrown.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If a student misses a pad in the air, then the student will do five pushups. If they are able to hit all three pads in the air with proper technique, then the instructor has five pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to see the pads fly in the air, and front kick the pads despite the varying directions they might be going in. This works on their ability to respond to visual cues as well as make sense of what they see, as they have to hit the middle of the pad in the air.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have 1 instructor with each line hold 3 small pads.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The first student will come up and go to a guarding stance.
  • The instructor will throw a pad at the student.
  • The student must move and kick the pad with a front kick before it touches the ground.
  • The third pad will be thrown on a different angle as well.
  • Your goal is to kick all 3 pads with a front kick.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Be sure to move so that you can reach the pad.
  • Kick fast so you don’t miss.
  • Keep your eyes on the pad so you can see your target.
Step 5
  • Continue until everyone has 2-3 turns.
