Skill: Speed
Drill: Don’t Strike Out
Equipment needed: 3 small pads per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students work on developing reactive SPEED by trying to round kick a pad that is thrown at them and not missing.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student misses the pad, then they have five pushups. If the student is able to hit every pad with the correct move, then the instructor will have five pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to see the pad when the instructor drops it, and then hit it out of the air. This works on the ability to make sense of what the student sees, as well as participate in visual activity, since they have to hit the middle of a small moving target.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line, have one instructor a few steps away holding 3 small pads.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • For each student, the instructor will toss 3 pads, 1 at a time.
  • The student must round kick the pad out of the air showing great reactive SPEED.
  • For each pad they kick, they will earn 1 point.
  • If a student misses then their team will get 1 strike, and the student will go to the end of their line.
  • Once a team collects 3 strikes then their team is out, add up all their points and that is they finishing total.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Remember to have good chambers when you kick.
  • Keep your eyes on the pad at all times.
  • Make sure you are always ready when you are up.
Step 5
  • Continue for 2-3 games.
